Altesalux: A Luminaire That Transforms with Light

A Unique Sculptural Lighting Design by Daniel Guillotin

The Altesalux luminaire is a captivating fusion of art and technology, designed by the talented Daniel Guillotin. Inspired by the reaction of PMMA fluorescences to daylight and LED sources, Guillotin set out to create a luminous object-sculpture that would transform with the changing light.

Bright by day and illuminating at night, the Altesalux luminaire is a truly unique piece. Its distinctive feature lies in its ability to react to daylight without being connected to any power source. During the day, the PMMA plates capture the natural light and restore it through the slices, creating a mesmerizing play of colors and transparency. When plugged in, the luminaire comes alive with its own LED source, diffusing light through the slices that transform into glowing wires.

Made from solid Wenge wood and PMMA, the Altesalux luminaire showcases the seamless integration of natural materials and modern technology. The mechanical assembly of the parts, without the use of glue, ensures both durability and sustainability. The design team, led by Daniel Guillotin, meticulously crafted each piece to achieve the perfect proportions and treatment of light on the plexiglass.

With dimensions of 470mm in width, 250mm in depth, and 1600mm in height, the Altesalux luminaire is a statement piece that demands attention. Its presence in any space creates a captivating atmosphere, evoking a human silhouette with its standing form, legs planted on the floor, and arms open wide.

The Altesalux luminaire project began in April 2017 after the Design Week in Milan and was completed in August of the same year. It made its debut at the Paris Design Week 2017 exhibition at the VIA gallery in September. Since then, it has garnered acclaim and recognition, including the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures category in 2018.

With its innovative design, the Altesalux luminaire pushes the boundaries of traditional lighting fixtures. It is a testament to Daniel Guillotin's artistic vision and his commitment to creating objects that evoke emotion and new sensations. The Altesalux luminaire is not just a functional lighting piece; it is a work of art that transforms with the changing light, offering a unique and captivating experience.
